Graduate Student Membership
Responsibilities & Obligations | Resident & Non-Resident Membership | How to Apply
Welcome, Graduate Students!
Graduate students benefit in many ways from being a Rotman Institute members. From actively conducting research to taking part in the intellectual life of the Institute, graduate students are involved centrally in the work of the Institute and contribute to its vitality in a variety of ways:
- Organizing and participating in reading groups
- Organizing and participating in workshops and events
- Attending lectures in the Rotman speaker series and major public events
- Supporting public engagement and knowledge mobilization activities
- Attending Rotman graduate student member meetings (usually held once per term)
Graduate student members are eligible to apply for Institute funding to support research projects and other activities, offered as graduate student assistantships or graduate fellowships.
Resident Membership
Resident members are assigned a workstation within the Institute’s collaborative workspace, where they have the benefit of working in close proximity of other students, Institute postdocs, and faculty members. They are typically involved with a research project run by a core faculty member of the Institute.
Resident Members are expected to be present in the Institute at least three days per week. They are provided with staff and IT support, access to a shared printer, and (if desired) a desktop computer.
The community of scholars working within the Institute benefit from social engagement via regularly held coffee breaks, some hosted in conjunction with members of the Brain and Mind Institute, and the presence of visiting fellows and guest speakers. The Institute also holds reading hours two days a week to provide time for quiet, distraction-free working.
Non-Resident Membership
Graduate students that prefer to keep an office in their home department can apply as non-resident members.
These students have research interests that align with the Institute or may be involved in an Institute research project, but they are not assigned a workstation within the Institute. Non-resident members still visit the Institute to participate in reading groups, work with other Institute members, and participate in Institute hosted events.
